There’s a meme that shows older folks surprised that the band they listened to in high school is still making music. Funny cos true. Winnipeg’s The Watchmen are a band which held the spotlight through the 1990s but are returning to Oshawa to the Bond St Events Centre Friday Mar 27 2026. And with new music!
“We are working on new music. . . started recording some ideas. . . pretty excited about it. I’m sure a couple of new songs will make it into our evening in Oshawa,” the band says in an email exchange with Slowcity. ca
The we here are Daniel Greaves, Joey Serlin, Ken Tizzard, and Sammy Kohn. The band formed in 1988 and released their debut album, ‘Mclaren Furnace Room’ followed by ‘In The Trees’ which went Platinum. They toured with the Tragically Hip. They were very much part of that new wave of Canadian bands such as the Hip, Sloan, Hayden and others doing it for themselves, which had a substantial influence on the bands which came after them.
We asked if the Watchmen were aware of that influence and if younger acts ever shout that back.
“I think about that a lot actually. I find it really interesting that you often don’t know you’re a part of an era or a scene until you get some distance from it and are able to look back on it.
“We do feel like we were part of a very important time in Canadian music and are really proud of that. I think the fact that so many bands from that time are continuing to see audiences come out, shows that the 90’s were a pretty special time.
To the second point, we do, on occasion, get some shout outs and have helped the younger generation and continue to do so. We’re humbled by it.” says the band.
Stuck On Planet Earth are opening for The Watchmen on this run which includes Kitchener, Ottawa and Oshawa, and why the Shwa we asked the band who came through the Moon Room in 1993.
“It’s been quite some time since we were there. We have great memories of playing Oshawa so we figured it’s time to make some new ones.”
