Melissa Auf der Maur; musician, check, both indie and superstar level, big check, but author, who knew?
Those now in the know were at Wavelength’s presentation of the one-time Hole bassist’s reading of her new book, ‘Even the Good Girls Will Cry; A ‘90s Rock Memoir’. at St. Anne’s Anglican Church Mar 20 2026.
Wavelength Music, the grassroots artist collective, celebrated 25 years this Spring Solstice weekend with a multi-venue, multi-genre festival based in the west end of Toronto. The Auf der Maur reading was part of the festival’s Friday events line-up which included some phenomenal Canadian bands and poems by two provocative and heartfelt poets.
The show began with a poem by the founder of Tender Possibilities, Farhia Tato, who writes poems about interconnectivity, surveillance, and environment; she was joined by the Juno and National Jazz award winner, Ian De Souza who played bass alongside the poetry reading.
The first musical act was the Toronto trio, bikebike, who played some beautifully constructed tracks that towed the line between electronic dance and post-rock. Soon after, there was another poetry reading by Eva HD, one of the poems was Bonedog, from the film ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’.
Then came the Montreal-based act, Bibi Club, an incredibly haunting and visually stunning band which projected their performance onto a screen behind them, giving this layered shadow-like display. And then, the main performance, a reading from Melissa Auf der Maur. She read the 14th chapter of the book which is titled Warrior Goddess.
Once finished she gave way to the energetic and vibrant underground punk rock band, Bad Waitress, which she seemed to delight in and regailed a story about hearing about them all the way back in 2018.
Auf der Maur’s memoir is available via our pals at Blue Heron Books in Uxbridge and rumours have it Hole may hit the road with Auf der Maur soon. Might be a while then til we see Melissa out and about so one off event and kudos to all at Wavelength for making all this radness happen.
