Ten years and counting for Isabella's Chocolate (and music!) Cafe in Oshawa

Will McGuirk April 17, 2017

Chocolates and coffee. That was the plan for Isabella’s Chocolate Cafe located in downtown Oshawa, initially on Simcoe Street South, now on King Street East. But since Giacomo Bruno first opened the doors a decade ago, live music has been added to the offerings. These days the coffee shop is run by Rosa Bruno, Giac’s sister, but music is still very much on the menu

The cafe is marking the Apr. 19 appearance of Japanese rock band, The Zoobombs, at the nearby Moustache Club, with its own specially designed batch of hand-made sugar cookies.

“I knew the Zoobombs was happening and i thought it would be so cool to do The Zoobombs bear character. I had stickers from the time they played Whitby. And I had seen them at the Silver Dollar,” says Rosa. “I always pick up random artifacts but I can’t find the bear. So I went online and saw the album cover, thought it was neat. I really like that black and white theme. I’m just going to make a little capsule zoobombs cookie collection.”

Over Isabella’s ten year tenure it has been a capsule for Oshawa’s music scene. The cafe has hosted a weekly open mic, all-ages shows and acted as an alternative venue for touring and local indie and upcoming acts. Even on occasion providing a place to bed down for the night.

“Bloodshot Bill ended up on my brother’s couch. He had to just crash. I hung out with my brother and sister-in-law, nieces, a lot. It was a Saturday show and I went over on the Sunday but didn’t realise he was there so I was, ‘oh, heey, Bloodshot Bill,’” she says.

The long list of Chocolate Cafe alumni include Evening Hymns, CATL, Timber Timbre and The Strumbellas. Dave Ritter of the Juno winning country-roots band says the cafe was the first place they played in Oshawa.

“Isabella's is the first place I remember where people who we didn't know personally started to come to see us,” he says. “When you just start out, you either play to your friends or people who just happen to be at the bar. The first few times people said, ‘we saw you play a few months ago and came to see you again tonight’, we were shocked! It was so exciting to think, wow, we almost, sort of, maybe have a few fans.”

When Giacomo Bruno moved in 2010 with his family to Halifax The Strumbellas came by to play his going away party.

Although the cafe no longer has space for shows it still has a strong connection with the music community at large. Even after her brother moved Rosa continued to follow her passion and interest in live music.

“I started an all ages open mic on Fridays, once a month. That was actually such great event. We just created a poster and put it out there. We had also been involved with SASS so we had some connection to the local 14 to 16 year-olds, sometimes 12, 13 year-olds who were coming through and we had such a good reaction. Such a good group of kids who came all the time and some weekends it was just insane in there,” says Bruno.

Isabella’s Chocolate Cafe gave the kids that extra boost along with the coffee and the chocolates. Some of those kids have won Junos, some of those kids are slinging java while working on their own big break. But there has to be one place in every town that gives the kids the break they need starting out.

“Isabella's was the spot to play in Oshawa, and there aren't always great places for bands to play in the GTA outside Toronto,” says Ritter.

Slowcity.ca video interview with Ronald Malcolm Lambert, Canadian Abstract artist

Will McGuirk April 14, 2017

In 1952 Ron Lambert was the youngest of 26 painters featured in one of Canada’s first Abstract shows. The Canadian Abstract Exhibition took place at Hart House Gallery in Toronto. Lawren Harris, Jock MacDonald, Jack Bush, Joseph Plaskett, J.L. Shadbolt, Hortense Gordon, Alexandra Luke and Leon Belleflure were among the artists showing. It was Lambert’s last major exhibit. He has continued painting and working but has only now at the age of 89 emerged to show his new works. The title of hiscurrent show at the Kent Farndale Gallery in Port Perry is his tribute to the Hart House exhibit.
Lambert was born in Oshawa, Ontario in 1927. At the age of 19, supported by artist Alexandra Luke, he went to study with colour theorist Hans Hofman in Providence, Rhode Island.
Oshawa in the 40’s had a strong art scene centred around the very wealthy McLaughlin family, Luke and Isabella McLaughlin in particular. Lambert’s talent was noticed and encouraged from an early age.
He chose the path of a commercial artist but he stayed friends with artists and was present at the Painters 11 salons hosted by Luke at her cottage at Thickson Point in Whitby.
After over 60 years of silence his talents and work have been discovered once again and encouraged by a new mentor and champion, Lawrence Brissenden.

Billy Bragg, Lowest of the Low, Sarah Harmer, Lindi Ortega among Hillside 2017 line-up

Will McGuirk April 12, 2017

When you get Billy Bragg, the one-man-Clash, you get opinion, politics, social issues, conversations and communication and community. You get values and you get value and I don't know if he's ever played Hillside but at Hillside you also get values and you get value. Seems a musical marriage made in hippie heaven and I love it. The Bragg played Mariposa a few years back and grown women were crying having met him, they were championing him, and his outspoken manner, and the way in which he challenges the system, challenges you can dance too. He is the current embodiment of the folkie activist, not the only one, but certainly a big one. It will be a homecoming for him of sorts and its a Hillside hug-a-thon you will not want to pass on. Bragg will perform solo and with Joe Henry. Together they recorded "Shine A Light: Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad." Going to be a special couple of days.

The festival runs July 14 to 16 at Guelph Lake Conservation Area. Day passes and weekend passes are available online via Ticketfly. Get the weekend. Always get the weekend.

Arkells knock knock 'Knocking at the Door,' want want wanting more more more

Will McGuirk April 11, 2017

New single from Hammers soul train that is The Arkells. They've stopped at every station repping from university dorms to Bonnaroo and deservedly so and after the hit making award winning Morning Report the crew have new news, a new single that hears them singing "I'm thirsty for more and more and more". Good to hear because we want more and more and more. The track will be included on a deluxe release of Morning report but is available on the digital realm, pick your supplier.

Hot Kid release 'Caught In The Light': put on the hightops, you're going dancing

Will McGuirk April 11, 2017

Its been sometime since I've seen the Hot Kids play, sometime mid 00s at the Velvet Elvis. They were good then and they are good now. Their new track "Caught in the Light" has that hand in hand celebratory feel when you're dancing with all your pals but the lead vox stares at you. Its very Metric meets Bruce Springsteen and Courtney Cox or Bono at Live Aid, you know the feeling when you and a thousand pals all bounce in time. Its the best and so is the Hot Kid.

DAVIDS collaborate with Terra Lightfoot on new EP track

Will McGuirk April 11, 2017

The all yelling DAVIDS say they've taken to the singing, real singing not barking on their latest EP. The 0117 is three tracks, Crown of Burrs, Boom the Nude and Eyes Turn featuring Terra Lightfoot. The foggy vocals of Lightfoot hover around Pet Shop Boys bright beach-pop vibe on the track alternating with some brief moments of furious dubstep. Its an adventurous marriage.

River and Sky 2017 announce Wintersleep, Timber Timbre, PUP and Weaves.

Will McGuirk April 10, 2017

Exclaim carried the announcement of some of the acts playing this year's River & Sky Festival. The beauty vibe and location of the festival, just east of North Bay is reason enough to hang but these four alone makes the fest a must stop. I thought last year's presentation of The Sadies on a beach near midnight was special but Timber Timbre, outside among the very landscapes that creep in and around his songs, is going to top even that.

West Coast indie-pop supergroup the New Pornographers join Mariposa 2017 line-up

Will McGuirk April 10, 2017

Yah, one word - Neko Case. Neko alone would be a headlining addition to an already stacked line-up for Mariposa taking place July 7, 8 and 9 at Tudhope Park in Orillia; a line-up which includes the Great Lake Swimmers, Barenaked Ladies, Matt Andersen, a tribute to The Last Waltz and BRUCE COCKBURN, plus Steve Poltz, Reuben and the Dark and JUNO winner WIlliam Prince.

So yes Ms Case would be delightful all by her self but nope its Canada 150 so there's more and more and more coming out for the Grande Dame of Folk Festivals; A.C. Newman, Blaine Thurier, Joe Seiders, John Collins, Kathryn Calder, and Todd Fancey join Case. Dan Bejar will be absent unfortunately. The band are touring their latest, "Whiteout Conditions."

Get yourself tidy, Crescent is on the horizon

Will McGuirk April 5, 2017

SlowTunes and slow motion may sum up this Bristol UK' artist's oeuvre. Like Shotgun Jimmie, Crescent, aka Matt Jones falls just under this side of endearing. Its smart and simple and its taken Jones ten years to get "Resin Pockets" out. Thats Slow but it should get here by May 26 2017 on Geographic.

Lillie Mae and Jack White get dusty and loose on 'Forever And Then Some'

Will McGuirk April 5, 2017

Lillie Mae who has been playing fiddle for Jack White has stepped to the fore-front. Her album "Forever And Then Some" produced by White will be available Apr 14 2017 on White's Third Man Records. "Wash Me Clean" is the single, its a skittery traditional country track held together by Mae's plaintive Emmy-Lou Harris vocals.
