After the flood, GIVERS deliver Bermuda from New Kingdom

Will McGuirk January 18, 2016

GIVERS came together after Katrina and her waves displaced members from their homes in New Orleans. The band must have picked something up in the experience as their tracks build in great waves building higher and higher until, well its not quite When The Levee Breaks but there's a rich organic feel to their electronica. "Bermuda" is the latest track from their album New Kingdowm. They play the Drake in Toronto Jan. 31

Wintersleep takes Amerika across Canada

Will McGuirk January 18, 2016

I like the visuals for Wintersleep's The Great Detachment. Are the figures dangling their feet or plunging in, is it upside-down or are we. Where are we? Where are the rocks we used to base our lives on, its all seems to be so many streams and we are swimming in one or the other topsy-turvy, nothing is solid anymore. Interestingly the promo for the new album describes it as a "raft", one "borne from reflection and changing technologies". The raft will dock at Lee's Palace in Toronto Mar. 4 and at the Casbah in Hamilton Mar. 5, all part of the band's March march across Canada. Go, its bound to be quite the immersive experience.

Wired and weird Jonathan Goldstein at the Winter Garden Mar. 29

Will McGuirk January 18, 2016

This ->

Massey Hall is pleased to present noted radio personality and writer Jonathan Goldstein at the Winter Garden Theatre on Tuesday, March 29 at 8pm. Host of CBC’s Wiretap (which hung up the phone in late 2015 after 11 years) and frequent contributor to This American Life, Goldstein is known for his signature brand of wry, self-deprecating humour and is a staple of Canadian media. The Atlantic, in their roundup of the best 50 podcasts of 2015, called Goldstein "the Wes Anderson of podcasting." He has written several books, a National Post column and for publications including the New York Times Magazine, Reader's Digest, The Walrus and GQ. His appearance at the Winter Garden Theatre will offer a rare opportunity to experience one of our country’s greatest voices in person for a night of multimedia storytelling.

Rae Spoon releases Armour track and video

Will McGuirk January 18, 2016

Rae Spoon have a late winter tour of Canada with dates at the Holy Oak in Toronto Feb 28 and 29. The band will release their eight album Feb. 19 on Coax Records and are sharing their lyric video for the title track. It contains the great lines - "On our bodies we were armour/ we can't tell where which one ends". Sometimes we build walls around ourselves and sense ourselves to be inside the wall but I guess sometimes we become the wall itself.

Kill off the old, ring in the new with Elliott Brood's death country NYE party

Will McGuirk December 17, 2015

Lee’s Palace in Toronto offers up some twang for those ringing bells welcoming in 2016. Juno winners Elliott Brood are headlining their New Year's Eve celebrations. The Brood are known for their entertaining live shows often including audience participation with kitchen flatware and tin baking trays. No matter when the roots and folk trad three piece play it is always a party so it is going to be off the charts for New Year’s Eve.

Joining them are Grey Lands and Billard Blossom, founded respectively by Wayne Petti and Bradley MacArthur , both of whom have their own friendship with Elliott Brood, guaranteeing, if nothing else, a party onstage.

Hamilton-based Grey Lands, whose recently released album, Right Arm, is among the year’s best, harken back to acts such as Dino Jr, Sonic Youth, Pixies and others, the bands Petti was listening to growing up in Oshawa, Ont. Petti is also a member of alt-country act Cuff The Duke and you can bet he will be letting his roots show with The Brood at some time during the festivities.

Mac Arthur and Petti are no strangers to each other, both are integral to the east GTA Black Grass scene. Mac Arthur also featured in Elliott Brood’s early career “Oh Alberta” video. A veteran of the underground roots scene MacArthur has, in Billard Blossom, gathered a group of musicians around him who both complement and challenge him. Clayton Churcher of Anagram, James Gorry and Oliver Ward of the Stone Sparrows, singer/songwriter Tim Watson and lap steel player David Slute add up to a sound that is Gram Parsons by way of Wilf Carter.

East meets West in Lisa Leblanc new video

Will McGuirk December 15, 2015

"My relationship with Western goes beyond its music and culture. It has become a philosophy for me."

Purity Ring release Heartsigh from another eternity

Will McGuirk December 14, 2015

Heartsigh, the new video from synth-dance act Purity Ring, features a long list of collaborators who all built on the band's stage stylings to create the video. The video, directed by Cecil Frena and Alex Fischer, incorporates "Submergence", an art installation by Brit collective Squidsoup, and choreography by L.A. dancer Juliette Irons. The rack is from Purity Ring's latest album "another eternity" on Last Gang Records.
