Heat at Baby G's in Toronto Feb 9 2017 and at Hillside in Guelph Feb 11
Montreal-based Heat turn up The Cure and Psychedelic Furs vibes on their new track "Lush", of their upcoming album Overnight (or you could say they are a chunkier heavier riffier The Dears). The record drops Jan 20 on The Hand Recording. Great driving track and the video which oozes cool has dropped too.
Adrian Underhill's anthem for the underdog, 'Not Good Enough'
Mixing lo-fi bedsit pop, autocrooon and dubstep Adrian Underhill's "Not Good Enough" offers a sonic hug for Gen anXiety. Underhill created the video for the track of his upcoming album which is produced by Kindness. The vid exudes a DIY Saul Bass sensibility.
The Pack A.D. go Coconut for the holidays
B.C. two-piece The Pack A.D. played one of the best shows I saw in 2016, with Greylands and PS I Love You at Lee's Palace in Toronto. Fantastic tight set, long tight set, showcasing their swing towards garage blues vibes rather than the heavier rock they dealt in initially. They have been touring their album Positive Thinking, its been getting rave reviews and they are celebrating with a free gift for y'all.

Matt Anderson has been previously announced as another headlining performer.

Quartette at the Regent Theatre Mon Dec 19
In the SlowCity we will always take the opportunity to focus on the roots of culture. Its pretty cool so that we can say Sylvia Tyson is in town as part of Quartette, Canada's formost foursome of folk. Cindy Church, Caitlin Hanford and Gwen Swick square out the group who started in a circle over twenty years ago.
Quartette are playing the Regent Theatre in Oshawa Monday Dec 19. They are on a cross-Canada tour with stops in B.C., Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario marking the season with “A Quartette Christmas”. The show is a Shantero Production.
The Good Brothers are very much here and very much now, new album streaming
“When you hear a song with an Irish air like Raglan Road and She Moves Through The Fair/
You long for the rare auld time over there and you wish you were at home” - A Rainbow's End
I am an immigrant, in Canada, from Dublin, Ireland, I miss the mythical rare auld times but trad-folk bands like the Goods make the here and now in Canada so much easier. I have to say it’s far from hard here, its just sometimes you wish you were at home.
Anyways sometime back I received an email; the Good Brothers were offering their new album Here And Now for free download. I jumped on it and it hasn’t left the rotation. Its now streaming on their soundcloud.
The Goods are Canada’s first family of bluegrass but on this recording they explore a lot more, demonstrating the tight bond they have on traditional folk, and their willingness to play around with the edges of the genre. Whether its finger-picking swing, the skipity stylings of the Clancys and the Furey Brothers, or the guitar rumblings of Gordon Lightfoot married with electrified Bob Seger, they carry it all in a tune so concise it could be pared down to a whistle.
I can’t say I am the most knowledgeable of the Goods’ catalogue although I have seen them several times in different settings, including the backroom of the Tartan Pub in Oshawa, however I will say this is among the best of records, touching on the touchstones of the genre sure, train beats and cheatin’ songs, maybe cheatin’ on train tracks but it is also a very personal timely record with songs about the longevity of love, about their here and now of their family, their relations, the world outside and how the outside moves inside.
"You’re gaining some weight, losing your hair, you walk through the house in tore-up underwear/ you’re drinking a lot, you’ll snore all the night through, and there’s other mystery noises you do, and you say you are concerned where our love is at/ Well, Honey why would you say that?" - Honey Why
If you want to learn how to wrap a story around a melody, or how to add to write about the heaviest subjects with the softest of touches or how to harmonize across generations, a great place to start is the Good Brothers’ Here And Now.
Montreal's Saxsyndrum leave it Up To You
Montreal's electrojazz outfit, Saxsyndrum, have released a new track "Up To You", and it may be up to you but I think it has a lot of Harry J's Allstars' "Liquidator" in it, which should please Montreal Impact fans who have Didier Drogba playing for them and Drogba is a former Chelsea FC player and of course "Liquidator" is the Chelsea kickoff chant.
If y'all need a refresher in Harry J ->
