The Regent Theatre May 23 2026

On any given night in Oshawa there can be up to 10,000 music fans in the downtown core. Any night, yes, as within an easy walk of each other, in a two block radius, there are three venues, one arena and several cafes and bars; all of them owned and operated in some capacity by people who grew up in the city. Yip in what others may see as the ‘Dirty Shwa’, the residents of the city are cleaning up by investing in themselves.

Biltmore Theatre May 23 2026

The Biltmore Theatre, a 650 capacity is owned by Diana Kedvessy, who inherited the club from her father who renovated the former historic theatre before his untimely passing just before opening night.

The Bond St. Event Centre, the renovated former Canadian Automotive Workers Hall, boasts three venues within its walls; the TwoTwoTwo, a basement club with capacity of 300; the Local Lounge which can accommodate approximately 40 people, and the main room with a capacity of 1200. There is also a cafe and a second floor restaurant. Bond St is owned and operated by a local family too.

The Regent Theatre has room for approx 700 punters, is also a classroom for Ontario Tech, and home to the Ontario Philharmonic. While the University owns it there has been considerable investment by the City of Oshawa in enabling the transformation of the historic theatre. The Regent is managed by a local who came up through the Oshawa music scene.

The Tribute Communities Centre is home to both the Ontario Hockey League Oshawa Generals hockey team (winner of the Memorial Cup most recently in 2015) and the Oshawa Firewolves Lacrosse Team which moved in in the Fall of 2025. The arena’s capacity is just over 7000 and is owned by the City of Oshawa but operated by the Oak View Group. The arena also however hosts live music events, most notably KISS played a show there, and most recently Blue Rodeo celebrated what can be called a hometown show as co-founder Greg Keelor has lived for several decades, in Kendal, a 30 minute drive from the TCC.

The Atria May 23 2026

There are several cafes and bars as previously mentioned. Among them Brew Wizards which hosts punk nights; the Atria which has music pretty well every night and has been in existence for over 40 years; Cork & Bean wine and coffee bar which hosts singer/songwriters nights. Worlds Collide, a comic book store and Kops Records regularly host live music events.

Add them up and should all venues have acts booked and sold-out, you have the possibility of 10,000 people pouring into the core for an evening of entertainment.

The photos included here are all from one night in Oshawa. That night was May 23 2026. It could be any given night in the city.

So the question is, why do the residents of the city, local business families, and individuals choose to invest, not just in their own downtown, but in music in particular?

Well that’s another story altogether.
