Slowcity.ca Vinyl Diggers: Daniel Norgren 'Buck'

Will McGuirk August 12, 2022

By Will McGuirk

Trying a new thing here, as I work in a record shop and get to listen to a lot of tunes available in the bins. This Norwegian blues kat Daniel Norgren, new to me, but Kops has his record ‘Buck’ in stock and since I found it I have played it daily in the shop, the tracks “Moonshine Got Me” and “Howling Around My Happy Home” in particular.

So good they're doing it again; Mariposa in the Fall!

Will McGuirk August 10, 2022

By Will McGuirk

What a marvellous time was had at Mariposa 2022. It was a soulful gathering of friends and colleagues surrounded by trees, water, and such wonderful music, from Mavis Staples to Kathleen Edwards, from workshops to hikes, and lazy Sunday morning coming-downs. So good.

So good in fact they’re doing it again.

Mariposa Folk Foundation President Pam Carter said in a press release, “To further celebrate the return of live music to our area and provide another reason to visit Simcoe County, we have partnered with the county to present a unique outdoor afternoon festival.”  Hear hear!!

An Autumn Mariposa will take place at Bayview Memorial Park, 9th Concession Road, Township of Oro-Medonte on Saturday, October 1, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature performances by four artists/groups: Aleksi Campagne, The Weather Station, Union Duke and Irish Mythen.

Later that evening Julian Taylor will perform at the Orillia Opera House. Also on the bill, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Aysanabee.

Robyn Ottolini, Meghan Patrick at Boots and Hearts this weekend

Will McGuirk August 4, 2022

By Will McGuirk

Good to see country festival Boots and Hearts back up and running, I had some good times at the Fest when it was held at Mosport - saw the Sadies with Gord Downie, and kudos to organisers as some of the Durham Region country music folks got in on the gig, on a line-up with some international figures.

Boots ‘n Hearts alumni (and no stranger now to international figures) Meghan Patrick is on the 2022 line-up, plus relative newcomer Robyn Ottolini, both of the Region of course. The fest had moved to Burl’s Creek in Oro-Medonte a few years ago and of course had closed up during the pandemic. But its all back, and with mega-star Shania Twain as thee headliner on Sunday Aug 7. Robyn plays the Sunday while Meghan perform on Saturday Aug 6.

Slowcity.ca Open Mic: Valerie June, Colyn Cameron, Chemical Club, A Family Curse, John Cale, Hot Chip, and Kodaline

Will McGuirk August 3, 2022

By Will McGuirk

“It feels sort of like an internal banter about love in conjunction with some apocalyptic survey,” - Colyn Cameron

“Actively seeking self improvement and pursuing positive changes over neutrality and repetition. Leaving unhealthy habits behind and holding yourself accountable for your own actions and behaviors” - Chemical Club

“When I wrote ‘Night Crawling,’ it was a reflective moment of particular times. That kind of NYC that held art in its grip, strong enough to keep it safe and dangerous enough to keep it interesting” - John Cale

“Freakout/Release is about pent-up energy and the need for release, and escape. It’s also about making sense of music, and at times being plagued by the thing you focus on - music never leaves my head for a second, which is usually a good feeling, but it can feel claustrophobic at times too.” - Hot Chip
