Slowcity.ca Open Mic with Ellis, Missy Bauman, Soccer Mommy, Minuscule, Picastro, Harrow Fair, 100 Mile House and Real Estate,

Will McGuirk February 25, 2020

By Will McGuirk

Sometimes we have so much to consume, so much to take in, so much media to see and hear that it becomes difficult to take a breath on a song, never mind trying to digest any of it, and we are slowcity.ca, we encourage you to sit and digest what you took in first, better for your overall health, but even we can feel the need to keep up, to dip in, and in and in again into the stream and then along comes a voice which just stills you regardless, slows you, slows your heart, slows your head, and one can sit on the bank, beneath a tree and watch the whole thing stream by with eyes closed..

“I want the record to feel like a relic from the past that’s been damaged and degraded with age, because it kind of represents the problems that I've developed as I've grown up, and how they've changed me.”  - Soccer Mommy
Soccer Mommy is playing Wednesday Apr. 8 at the Phoenix in Toronto ON.

"The song is a recognition of the difficult work any relationship can be but what can happen when you take that leap. Even when the future isn’t clear. Hope starts here. No courage without fear." - Harrow Fair

Harrow Fair is playing Saturday Apr. 18 at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto ON.

“I was asking myself a lot of uncomfortable questions throughout the process of making this album. Wondering if being an artist is irresponsible or selfish, particularly with the world in the state that it’s in, particularly as a parent of young kids.” - Martin Courtney

Strangers become friends: Upcoming classes, shows and sessions at Kops Records in Oshawa

Will McGuirk February 24, 2020

By Will McGuirk

The community space at Kops, we have dubbed it the Upstairs Basement for good reason, has been going swimmingly and there is more on the way. I am still hoping to find someone or some crew willingly to collaborate with us on video shoots, they would be ones who see the value in what we are building and are ready to use the platform offered for their own elevation, but no one just yet.

In the meantime we have some pretty rad events coming up with Hamilton/Oshawa duo Two Strangers coming in Saturday Feb 29 at 4 p.m. Amy Pinkus and Nathan Rideout are Two Strangers. They just released their debut EP, ‘Accidental Happiness’, last month. The five songs are built on harmony and are about two strangers becoming friends, good friends. Opening will be Jenna Doe.

Earlier on Saturday at 1 p.m. we have DJ Darrin Be coming in to offer free classes on How to DJ. This was Darrin’s own suggestion and I am very grateful to him for seeing what it is we are trying to do, stepping forward and getting involved. Its all-ages so share the news and lets build the next generation of off the cuff wax spinners.

Sunday March 1 Oshawa Music Award nominee Skye Wallace is coming by for a session. Skye mixes her classical music training with punk ballads and folk melodies. Her self-titled album has been nominated in the 2020 Best Album category at the OMAs. Its a whole lot of hooks which call up some Big 90s pop spirituals from Sonic Youth, Big Wreck and Limblifter.

Hecks she will even put them to rhyme. Her smokey new single is out and the video has the Bowmanville ON singer as a silvery siren singing out the inner thoughts of the young woman out on a date. Meghan is nominated for a Juno this year and will be performing at the awards. We wish her well.

Will McGuirk February 14, 2020

By Will McGuirk

Slowcity.ca had the pleasure of spending time with Irish singer/songwriter/actor Ryan O’Shaughnessy a couple of years back and we are always happy to support the crew even if they’re not local to us anymore. Dude’s been doing some fine things and this new track has been given the nod from the Hot Press who have the premiere. Zapho is another Dub so there you go, bridges etc.

Gearing up for the Junos is our Meghan. The CBC asked for a cover of a fave past winner and Ms Patrick chose “Black Velvet” by Alannah Myles. Give it up for Kasador, Kingstonian pop-rockers drop new single 'Givin It Up'

Will McGuirk February 13, 2020

By Will McGuirk

Slowcity.ca pals and Kops Oshawa alumni Kasador have released their latest single, the sly and funky “Givin It Up” and its a hit with its China Girl wailing guitar finish and we say oh baby just you shut your mouth and give it up. The band are on tour with dates below. No D-Rock dates but maybe the Limestone City lads will drop in to say hi as they drive by on the 401 on their way to TO.

PUP brew up 'Scorpion Hill' with Town to aid Sistering Toronto

Will McGuirk February 12, 2020

By Will McGuirk

"When an awesome spot like Town Brewery asks if you want to be involved in a beer-related charity initiative, the answer is obvious,” says Zack Mykula of PUP, the JUNO nominated punk band from Toronto, “Especially when it benefits such an amazing group as Sistering. Working on behalf of women in need in the Toronto area, be they homeless, marginalized or socially isolated, their cause of compassion is very close to our hearts."

Town Brewery based in south Whitby has collaborated with the members of PUP to brew up a Kveik Pale Al named “Scorpion Hill”, the title of a track on the band’s latest album, ‘Morbid Stuff.’ Kveik is a centuries old yeast used in Norway.

The beer will be available for sale Friday Feb 21 2020, the day before PUP’s sold-out out show at the Oshawa Music Hall in neighbouring Oshawa.

Sistering is a multi-service agency for at-risk, socially isolated women and trans people in Toronto who are homeless or precariously housed.

“Up on Scorpion Hill watching life /Passing me by in the pale moonlight /And I sat there forever, three sheets to the wind It’s not helping my case, the state that I’m in”
- lyrics from Scorpion Hill

Slowcity.ca Open Mic with Slow Leaves, Sean Burns & Lost Country, Emily Rockarts, Caley Thomas, Riches, Austra and PUP

Will McGuirk February 6, 2020

By Will McGuirk

Don’t you just love how a song can grab you and swirl you ‘round the dance floor and you’re not even moving but still on the couch. We love all things slow here but we love love Slow Leaves. Just when you think you are a jaded old coot, a song still holds the power to awaken the youth within, willing to be thrilled so thrill me Slow Leaves thrill me.

By Will McGuirk

Our really nice pals in the rock duo The Standstills went deep and came back with a warning; “No More Mr. Nice Guy”. So watch out things are about to get even less nice in the ShwarawkCity!! (but we suspect these two kats will actually still be nice)
