The silent sounds of Fogo found on 'All This Here,' new album by Jonas Bonnetta now available

Will McGuirk April 28, 2018

Jonas Bonnetta
All This Here
Idea of North Recordings

By Will McGuirk

Somehow Jonas Bonnetta has captured the silence of a place like Fogo Island on his new album, “All This Here.”

There is an exhibit at the AGO of artist Yayoi Kusma, called 'Infinity Mirrors'. There are a lot of dots, there are a lot of dots in Kusama’s works. At the AGO visitors are given a sheet of dots and they can place them in a white furnished room, the idea being I guess that the colourful dots bring the space into relief.

But the dot is not the thing. The space between the dot is the thing, the space is where the art is.

There is a quote attributed to Miles Davis about it being the notes you don’t play that matter. It’s the space between the notes you play that matter.

Bonnetta’s album is about space and the silence of space. His music frames the silence of Fogo, gives its form, brings the emptiness into relief and it is there the majesty of this All This Here rests.

Although presented in several named songs, with intervals, the album should be listened to as a whole, in one sitting, to understand how sonically erudite it is.

The music is a poetic explanation of how Fogo is. There are no words spoken or sung and yet the story of island life unfolds. One hears there the long slow creak of wooden boats nuzzling each other in the harbour as they rise and fall on the tide, there the low burr of the fog horn, in there the swipe of a lighthouse beam passing, like a slap, felt more than heard; the barely there moan of a bagpipe, the slight squeaking of a fiddle and with it a feeling of familiarity, with a people never met, with the sense of lives lived, a history, invisible companions at ease with the come-from-away, on here sharing this place, this afterthought of Newfoundland.

And yet none of those sounds exist on this record. This is not a recording of the sounds of Fogo; waves, gulls, winds. This is not the dots. One simply cannot express silence with sounds but one can with feeling and this is what Mika Rosen does on violin, Anne Mueller does on cello and Bonetta tasks himself with on piano, and on synthesizer. Somehow they create a place that is not seen or heard or even touched but it is experienced.

'All This Here' began as the soundtrack to a documentary of the island and the unique architecture built there by Todd Saunders. The soundtrack was the groundwork for this record and if one closes one’s eyes while listening one gets too, the sense, at times of architecture looming in the darkness. One hears their stillness.

While Bonetta, Rosen and Mueller construct the sounds on the album there are intervals of recordings, of cars, of footsteps, but beyond these real sounds there is little of the human on the album. Bonnetta manages to be an invisible observer of Fogo Island throughout the 16 tracks but he chooses to reveal himself on the final one, “Fogo (Evening)”. On this track Bonnetta adds rhythm, a beat, an order to the pace of Fogo. Here he shows his hand and places himself on the island, if only to wave us off.

Once I visited the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. I am Irish, Dublin and in my late 20s I went out to the island of Inis Mor and as soon as I set foot on the rock, for it is just that, a 300 foot above sea level high rock in the Atlantic, the only soil is the compost of thousands of years of seaweed dragged in from the icy waters, as soon as the ferry from Galway docked and I stepped out and on to the land it was as if a flurry of souls, uncountable numbers, surged from the stone and through me and wrapped me and I have never felt so much at home in a place as I did on that rock. It spoke to my genes, sang to the deepest part of me and I awoke and knew myself.

I suspect this rock on the other side of the Atlantic may have given Bonnetta a similar experience. There is an expertise in his sonic storytelling which only comes from living it. He knows this place, knows it deeply and channels all of it through these tracks.

Elliott Brood and more play Prince Edward County indie fest County Pop Apr 28

Will McGuirk April 25, 2018

By Will McGuirk

I do take delight in these Oshawa connections which bind this music scene of ours here at slowcity.ca with those elsewhere, both big and small. There is one with Elliott Brood, the twangstas of death country. They headline this year's County Pop festival at the Crystal Palace in Picton Saturday Apr 28 2018. The event itself is curated by Dave Ulrich, of the Inbreds and zunior.com and also an ex-resident of Oshawa plus on this year's line-up is KASKA, one-time resident of Whitby but very much part of the mid-Oughts scene around the Velvet Elvis. Lots of Shwa in the Pop so far The Brood's connection with the Shwa is based not just on the many fans they have here but also on the friends and the videos shot here. Chris Mills shot two at the Moustache Club and Bradley Boy MacArthur and partner Miss Jude make a cameo in the Brood's Bonnie & Clyde style video for "Oh Alberta."

But its not like The County Pop is looking elsewhere for the festival's content. They are a homegrown fest with local wineries, breweries, restaurants and food trucks available on-site plus several local artists will be onstage. And if its a nice day note there is a skatepark right beside the Palace.

Chastity releases video for 'Children', explores Dafonte Miller case

Will McGuirk April 24, 2018

Chastity has sourced much of his work from his hometown of Whitby ON. The city fuels his songs and now the video for the previously release track, "Children" from his upcoming album Death Lust. The video reflects on the case of 19-year-old Dafonte Miller, resident of Whitby, who was beaten allegedly by an-off duty police officer.
The Toronto Star has been reporting on the case.

Dan Mangan 'Fool For Waiting' is a rallying call to charm

Will McGuirk April 22, 2018

“Fool For Waiting” is about “finding someone who makes you feel less crazy, or at least someone who finds your craziness endearing because it’s real and honest,” says Dan Mangan. “And that real, imperfect love is not always as fantastical or magical as a wild romance, but that it’s worth waiting for.”
And who isn't waiting, really, who isn't?

Kalle Mattson breaks with his folk past with 'Broken In Two'

Will McGuirk April 22, 2018

What do you call a folk singer/songwriter when Folk Is Dead? Perhaps these boxes are finally being bust open and we can use the term artist so now then Kalle Mattson is an artists. The Ottawa-based singer/songwriter (dang) has an artistic sensibility, he builds to the subject rather than the frame. His latest, long time coming,  takes a turn for the electronic and the electronica; possibly folktronica along the lines of KASHKA or maybe the same artist can put out Harvest and Trans and still be Neil Young, whatever. Whatever Kalle Mattson is doing it is always worth a listen. Here's the track, "Broken In Two" in a familiar frame and in its actual album version, a track broken in two so speak.

Celebrate Earth Day with Annie Sumi 'In Everything'

Will McGuirk April 22, 2018

By Will McGuirk

If we have to use the internet today, the day we take stock of this planet we call home, a planet in distress, a planet in turmoil, all due in part to our unchecked consumption of power, even this power used to use this internet, then let us a least choose this power to connect and share a simple message, look after your home, look after yourself and make the changes where you can and lets use it to connect more people with Annie Sumi, a child of the Earth if ever there was one. Listen and then in a few minutes log off, unplug and go for a walk instead.

Cosmic Canadiana duo, Whitehorse at the Oshawa Music Hall Apr 21

Will McGuirk April 21, 2018

There's a deep sonic seam running from one end of Canada to the other. It's termed American but its in reality its Canadiana and Whitehorse are one those acts which mine that sound. Think in terms of Gram Parson and Emmylou Harris sure but Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland are their own couple, one of Canada's great guitarist's and one of the country's great voices, all partnered up. They have moved the Cosmic American Music of the Flying Burrito Brothers deeper into the cosmos on their latest, "Panther in the Dollhouse," out on Six Shooter and nominated for Adult Alternative Album at the 2018 Junos. Whitehorse are touring, making at stop at the Oshawa Music Hall Saturday Apr 21. Dan Edmonds is opening, get there early.

Crown Lands, Mappe Off and Annie Sumi announced for Hillside, runs July 13-15 2018

Will McGuirk April 17, 2018

By Will McGuirk

Hillside 2018 is going to be a lot of fun. The annual music fest in Guelph always is really but with three of my fave Durham Region acts on the bill its going to be even more so. All three, Crown Lands, Mappe Of and Annie Sumi are doing fine work, building and garnering even more attention as the days go by.

Crown Lands retro-psyche rawk, Mappe Of's prog-folk ramblings and Sumi's darling meditations are just a few of the great acts coming outta the Region, count Dizzy, Chastity, West Hammock, Matlock Expressway, Rory Taillon among those you will see and hear more of at festivals this year.

Its a good time in the D-Rawk however its odd I am also engaged in a FB conversation about how the Oshawa city staff are failing local acts by not booking them for their city-run events. Lot of work to do yet I guess but at least other communities are digging our kats and giving them a stage.

Hillside announced its full line up for its stages today and as per usual its as much on the edge as it ever was.  Destroyer!! Yes!! Adrian Underhill, Chad Van Gaalen, U.S. Girls, Partner, Walrus and Cancon classy folk trio Tamarack. Too many for me to bother typing but reality is Hillside is one of the highlights of the summer and more so when spent seeing pals get the accolades so justly deserved. Get your tickets, get your camping sites, get on it.
