All or Nothing wins the bottle of Trafalgar, sweet deal brewed up with mead maker
All or Nothing Brewery in Oshawa Ont. has purchased all and everything of the Oakville-based Trafalgar Ales & Meads as well as its sister companies, the Black Creek Historic Brewery and Trafalgar Artisanal Distillery. Co-owner Jeff Dornan of All or Nothing says the brewery has no immediate plans to leave Oshawa although the Press release states the purchase comes with a bricks and mortar facility in Oakville.
"All or Nothing will continue to exist in Oshawa for the foreseeable future, we just resigned our lease for another 2 years so we are not planning to uproot and move operations anytime soon. The Durham region has been very good to us over the last couple years and we want to continue to work and live in the community," says Dornan when contacted by Slowcity.ca
The purchase gives All or Nothing access to greater production capacity he says and further investments in the new facility will be made, including fermentation tanks and new canning lines.
"We will be expanding the All or Nothing line into additional wheat beers sticking with our company philosophy of being Canada's choice for wheat beer. We are looking at having an additional All or Nothing sku launch into the LCBO for fall of this year," he says.
Many breweries are becoming community hubs, event spaces and restaurants. Dornan says they have plans to use the location in a variety of ways.
"Trafalgar currently has a great bottle shop and intimate event space that we are looking to freshen up and create more regular programming in. We are always excited when brewery fans come to visit and look forward to welcoming them to the Trafalgar location in the days ahead," he says.
Slowcity.ca is always excited to see creative entrepreneurs coming out on the win side of an all or nothing.
Nova Scotia's Kilmore craft up some riffs for Manantler Brewery Sat. June 18
Kilmore put the riff in rock. The Nova Scoatian four piece follow up a recent gig in Oshawa with another Saturday June 18 at Manantler CRaft Brewery in Bowmanville. They will also play at The Hideout in Toronto Friday as part of the NXNE Festival. Lead vocalist Heather Doran says they all grew up with Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden, Nirvana and Pj Harvey among other great bands.
“These are things we absorb and you can see in our songwriting,” she says. “But saying that, I feel Kilmore has its own identity and we look to create music that is original.”
Doran points to the original track “Rising Sun” off their recent EP City Lights as being most indicative of the direction they want to take their classic sound in.
“It is a straight ahead rock song and brings a lot of the feel we want to portray in Kilmore,” she says.
City Lights, their debut release, garnered them a nomination each at the 2015 Music Nova Scotia Awards and a 2016 East Coast Music Awards.
Joining Doran is her brother Dan Doran on guitar, Neil Spence on bass and Lor Sangster on drums. She says she had been in bands with her brother before and they wanted to start a new project together.
“We tried out some other musicians but we knew once we played with Lor and Neil that this was going to be a great fit. We all have a love for music and we all bring different music influences. Riff rock says a lot of how we write our music. We usually bring a lot of different riffs to the table and work as a unit to bring the songs together,” she says.
Kilmore will, as they say, be bringing it to their live shows. Catch them while they are in the area.
Born Ruffians "We Made It", play Peterborough Folk Festival Aug 20
Born Ruffians, known for their jitter-pop, have collaborated with Muskoka Brewery on a beer called RUFF Draught. The brew will be available June 7 at The Hideout and at the Session Toronto Craft Beer Festival June 11 that takes place at Dundas Square in TO. I'm sure it won't be as bubblicious as their tunes, tunes which yes you can get on their album RUFF and on the bonus XTRA RUFF EP, available on Paper Bag Records. Their track "We Made It" seems appropriate to feature. Born Ruffians have a few dates over the summer including the Peterborough Folk Festival Aug 20.
